Desulfate a Battery: How to Repair Battery Pack

Running out of patience dealing with a battery that is half working, half not? Ever tired of your battery defaulting on you at the moment you need it most? Then it suddenly works when you have no need for it whatsoever? There are two answers to your nagging battery problem: you either get your car keys, drive to the nearest shop you can find, buy a new one and all is well in an instant; or you can desulfate a battery or fix the battery yourself if it is broken. Both options require you to spend money, yes. But the questions to consider are: How much are you supposed to spend for either choice and for how long will you wait?

Reconditioned Bosch Tools

True. Buying a new battery can solve your problem in jiffy. But considering how much batteries cost these days, is buying still a practical option? On the contrary, if you desulfate a battery o repair the battery pack yourself, it can cost you only half or even lower than half of what you are supposed to pay for new ones but for an opportunity cost of your time.

Reconditioned Bosch Tools

For example, an authentic Bosch battery pack cost - . Reconditioning the batter does not cost anything when you have the equipment, but if you have to fix the insides of the battery, it should cost you somewhere around a third of the price. The following is the procedure of how to repair a Bosch battery pack. You can only recondition a battery pack that's functioning, so if there is a problem with the battery you might want to try repairing it.

1. Assess the battery's condition. Make sure the battery pack is the problem. Take the battery pack out and examine the voltage across + and - sides using a voltmeter. There should be a total of 9 volts for this pack considering it has 8 cells with a 1.2 voltage each (for NiCad batteries). The minimum charge should only be 8 volts. If it is way below this, then buy a new one instead.

2. Gather the following:
• At most 2 hours of your time
• A set of 8 cells of Sub-C type
• A craft knife
• Long-nosed pliers
• A working soldering iron
• Plastic Glue

3. Carefully open the pack - its plastic case - with the craft knife.

4. Take the pack out carefully. Do not break the thermistor - a device taped on the cell and linked to the third terminal. Take note of the battery's divisions.

5. Check on each cell and note only those that have malfunctioned. This way you only need to replace the damaged ones and not the whole thing. At times, the cells may do well but the connection is broken. So check thoroughly.

6. With the long-nosed pliers, carefully detach the interconnected metal strips.

7. To rebuild the pack, use the soldering iron and solder the detached metal strips to the new cells.

8. Examine the voltage at both ends again. If the pack shows a nominal charge, then set up the pack in the plastic case.

9. Verify again the charge. If the charge is at its desired figure, put it back together by gluing it.

10. Recharge the pack.

11. To examine the effectiveness of the repair, give it a run.

This is just an example of how to repair a battery pack. For specific types of battery, you can look up in the internet for more references. The process is quite easy to do. All you need is a good set of instructions and materials, and you are good to go. On top of it all, it is way cheaper than buying a new one! That being said, would you now rather buy or do desulfating and the fixing yourself?
