IP Camera Standards

While attending the ISC West Conference in March, I noticed that many booths had signs that said, member of "ONVIF." After looking more into it, I discovered that ONVIF stood for Open Network Video Interface Forum. ONVIF, along with PSIA, which stands for Physical Security Interoperability Alliance, are working toward a universal "standard" for the interface of network video products. Since the Internet Protocal Camera Market is booming and is projected to be a multi-billion dollar market, the battle to come up with a global standard makes sense. This means that eventually you can make any IP Camera work with any IP Management system. This is a win for customers because it will eventually lead to lower costs and easy access.

ONVIF is currently backed by Axis, Bosch, Sony, Canon and a few other large camera manufacturers and has approximately 45% market share, in terms of IP cameras.

PSIA has the support of companies like Cisco, as well as OnSSI, GE, and Pelco among others. They currently represent the companies that have the lesser IP camera share, which combined is just a fraction of Axis and Sony.

Currently, making an IP Camera compatible with the system ID is not only difficult but also a very costly feat. These companies are working toward the goal of bringing interoperability to IP Cameras since there is such a greater functionality than a with an analog camera. From what I have heard and read, there is a long way to go before the industry reaches a consensus and all cameras. Until this happens, customers need not to fret. There are companies, like LiveLine who simplify the setup process, making it simple and easy for the average person.

Who will win the battle of the IP Camera Standard? Its too soon to tell. ONVIF has the advantage of having the larger market share and seems to be the standard of choice for Europe and Asia. While PSIA is moving quickly and its specifications seem to be easier to implement. Who knows if another company may emerge to give these two companies a run for its money. It is quite possible for both standard to exist concurrently, but as I said, its too early to tell.
